Monroe County was formed in 1821 from Creek Indian land. It is named for President James Monroe, the 5th President
of the United States and author of the Monroe Doctrine.Forsyth, the county seat, is named for John Forsyth, who,
as minister to Spain, negotiated the purchase of Florida in 1819. Culloden was named for a Scottish Highlander
who opened a store there in 1780. Culloden is also the site of the oldest Methodist church in Georgia.
Notice of Audit:
Monroe County Board of Elections will be completing an
audit of June 16, 2026 General Primary Runoff on
June 26, 2026 @ 10:00 a.m. and will continue until completion.
NOTICE OF RECOUNT:
The Secretary of States office has received a recount
request from Brandon Martin, candidate in the Republican
PSC District 3 General Primary Election that was held on
Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
Notice is hereby given that the Monroe County Board of
Elections and Registration willl begin the recount on:
Wednesday, June 24, 2026 @ 10:00 a.m. and will continue until
completed.
